The first national dance craze that became also a craze in most parts of the world, was the Charleston. It originated in the city Charleston, came to New York with the theater productions “Ziegfeld Follies” and “Running Wild” (1922/23) and inspired the people thereby.
The song “Charleston” stuck in everybody’s ear. The novel twisting of the feet and swinging of the arms to the impulsive rhythm of the music did the rest to excite the masses. Women, who danced the Charleston, were called “Flappers”, because the movement of their arms looked like the flapping of bird wings.
As music changed in the late 20s Lindy Hop developed out of the Charleston and therefore Charleston moves are an essential and very attractive part of the Lindy Hop.
Maybe the Charleston steps were the movements that attracted you most the first time you saw Lindy Hop or you just want to increase the variety of your dancing. Get these kicks and the excitement they give to you.
